Xcel Energy to build largest solar plant in Minnesota

by Kali Persall

Xcel Energy has revealed plans to construct a $575 million, 460-megawatt solar project in Minnesota, which would be the largest solar energy plant in the state.

Located in Becker, a city in Sherburne County, the plant will be constructed adjacent to the company's Sherco coal-fired power plant, according to several news reports.

The project would use existing transmission infrastructure from the Sherco coal plants and would be among the lowest-cost solar power plants in the state, reports StarTribune.

Xcel and National Grid Renewable will handle the development, with Xcel serving as owner and operator of the plant.

If approved by the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission, the solar plant would begin construction in 2022 and come online in 2024.
