Xcel Energy has plans for a $575 million solar project, which is considered one the largest energy plants in Minnesota.
“It will be among the lowest-cost solar energy in the state and will share the existing transmission infrastructure at the Sherco power plant, helping keep bills low for customers,” the company said in a statement.
The 460-megawatt Sherco Solar project will be built starting in 2022, with a goal of being completed in 2024. The project is projected to produce enough energy to power 100,000 homes each year.
The planned project is a key step by Xcel Energy to retire its coal plants in the region, including the Sherco plant. By the year 2050, the power company plans to deliver 100 percent carbon-free electricity.
