The world’s safest cities

Tokyo once again tops the list as the world’s safest city, according to The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Safe Cities Index 2017.

In fact, with respect to overall city scores, the Asia Pacific region holds six of the top 10 safest cities — Tokyo; Singapore; Osaka, Japan; Melbourne; Sydney; and Hong Kong.

The index ranks 60 major cities on 49 indicators within four security-related categories (digital, health, infrastructure and physical), with each city earning scores out of 100. For the 60 cities, the average overall city score was 72 out of 100.

With the index last published in 2015, here are some of the latest findings:

In many cities, security is falling rather than rising. Asian and European cities remain at the top of the index. Asia, the Middle East and Africa dominate the bottom of the index. Security remains closely linked to wealth, but the scores of high-income cities are falling. Income
