White House proposes massive deregulation, taking the brakes off infra projects

The Trump administration has disclosed a plan to accelerate infrastructure projects across the country in what some are calling the “most significant deregulatory proposal” of the administration.

According to the administration, the initiative would “reduce unnecessary burdens and delays for environmental reviews.” The Trump administration said it has taken nearly eight deregulatory actions for every new significant regulatory action.

The proposed rule, released by the White House Council on Environmental Quality on Jan. 9, would overthrow several Obama-era environmental regulations under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), establishing two-year time limits to complete environmental impact statements (EISs) and a one-year limit to complete environmental assessments.

Currently, EISs take an average of five years to complete, with an average of more than seven years for highways.
