Technology group Wärtsilä has agreed to its first energy storage project in the Netherlands to help stabilize the electric grid. The company will supply a 25-megawatt energy storage system to GIGA Storage, marking the country’s largest system to date.
The energy storage system, dubbed the GIGA Buffalo battery, will be located alongside wind and solar assets at the Widnet smart grid, located at the Wageningen University & Research test center in Lelystad. The system will store the equivalent of the annual energy consumption of more than 9,000 households each year.
The GIGA Buffalo battery is expected to become operational in October 2022.
“The Buffalo battery will help stabilize the Netherlands’ electricity grid and save a maximum of 23,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year,” said Maarten Quist, COO of GIGA Storage. “We’re pleased to work with Wärtsilä to implement this landmark project, which will help us reach our goal of deploying 1
