The Virginia Port Authority has completed a $320 million container terminal expansion project in Portsmouth, Va., doubling its annual throughput capacity to 1.2 million container lifts per year, according to media sources.
The project expanded VIG’s berth another 800 feet to accommodate up to three ultra-large vessels at a time, and added four 170-foot-tall ship-to-shore cranes, as well as 26 rail-mounted gantry cranes at the terminal.
The expansion is part of a larger $700 million project to expand the Virginia International Gateway (VIG) facility’s capacity, along with the facility’s other primary container terminal, Norfolk International Terminals, by 40 percent in the next 14 months.
Daily productivity has already increased at the port, reports Virginia Business. In 2019, the port handed a record 3 million TEUs of cargo, up from 2.85 million in 2018.
