The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has awarded more than $220 million in discretionary grant funding for the improvement of port facilities in 15 states and territories.
The funding will go toward 18 projects, eight of which are located in opportunity zones, which were established to revitalize economically distressed communities, according to Elaine Chao, U.S. secretary of transportation.
The federal grants will be awarded through the Maritime Administration’s (MARAD) Port Infrastructure Development Program, which provides planning, operational and capital financing, and project management assistance to improve the capacity and efficiency of U.S. port facilities.
“These grants will help our nation’s economy and ensure that America’s ports can continue to operate effectively in the competitive global marketplace,” said Mark Buzby, maritime administrator.
