Uganda eyes $328m for major expressway project

by Kali Persall

The government of Uganda is seeking $328 million for a billion dollar transportation project, known as the Kampala – Jinja Expressway project, according to several news sources. Funding is expected to be supplied by the African Development Bank and the French Agency for Development.

The 95-kilometer (59-mile) project forms part of the northern trade corridor from Mombasa in Kenya through Kigali in Rwanda, according to Construction Review Online. This forms a strategic corridor that serves as a trade link to the sea for several landlocked countries.

According to InfraPPP, the project involves the construction of a six-lane toll road between Kampala, Uganda’s capital, and Jinja. It aims to improve road infrastructure in Uganda, improve road safety, and facilitate trade and tourism. This project will be the first built in the country using a public-private partnership model.
