The U.S. economy added 225,000 jobs in January, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the unemployment rate was little changed at 3.6 percent. In addition, the job gains in November and December 2019 were revised upward by a total of 7,000 jobs. Total nonfarm payroll employment for November was revised to 261,000, and the employment gains in December were revised to 147,000.
The rise in total nonfarm employment exceeded the average monthly gain in 2019 of 175,000 jobs and outpaced growth in the labor force to provide a strong indication of a robust economy.
