Tokyo Gas buys 500MW Texas solar project

Tokyo Gas America, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tokyo Gas Co., has acquired a 500-megawatt solar project in Wharton County, Texas, the company announced on July 29.

Located near the Houston load center, Aktina Solar Project was developed by Hecate Energy, a renewable energy development company headquartered in Chicago. Tokyo Gas acquired the project through the company’s newly established subsidiaries, including TG Aktina Holdings, in the United States.

Tokyo Gas disclosed a capital contribution of JPY49 billion ($466 million).

While installed solar capacity is relatively low in Texas at present, Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has one of the highest GDP and population growth rates among the U.S. power markets and is expected to develop into a substantial solar market within the United States, according to a statement by Tokyo Gas.
