Spain’s Telefonica Group and Caisse de dépôt et placement du Quebec (CDPQ) have forged a partnership to construct, develop and operate a neutral and independent optical fiber wholesale network in Brazil.
As part of the transaction, the companies formed a neutral wholesale company known as FiBrasil Infraestrutura e Fibra Ótica, and they will each hold a 50 percent stake in the joint venture entity under a co-control governance model. Telefonica’s holdings will be split equally (25 percent each) between Telefonica Brazil and Telefonica Infra.
The goal of FiBrasil will be to deploy and operate fiber-optic networks in selected mid-sized cities across Brazil outside the state of Sao Paulo, and to offer fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) wholesale access to all telecommunications service providers. The entity will start with a portfolio of 1.6 million homes and will aim to expand to 5.5 million within four years.
CDPQ is contributing up to C$408 million ($322 million)
