Stonepeak-backed Ampyr Australia buys remaining stake of Wellington BESS project from Shell

Ampyr Australia, part of Singapore-based outfit Ampyr Energy, which is backed by Stonepeak, has acquired Shell Energy Operations’ remaining stake in the first stage of the Wellington battery energy storage project under development in New South Wales, Australia.

Ampyr Australia has now secured full ownership of the 1-gigawatt-hour project, including the 300-megawatt/600-megawatt-hour stage one and the planned 100-megawatt/400-megawatt-hour stage two. According to reports, stage one of the Wellington BESS project is expected to be energized in 2026, with the second stage to come online in 2027.

The Wellington BESS project consists of a grid-scale BESS with a total anticipated discharge capacity of 500 megawatts and a storage capacity of 1,000 megawatt-hours within a landholding immediately east of the TransGrid Wellington Substation. The project will include a substation, a control and office building, civil works and the electrical infrastructure required to connect
