Statkraft to build first wind farms in Chile

Statkraft, Europe’s largest renewable energy generator, is planning to build its first wind farms in Chile some 124 kilometers (77 miles) south of the capital Santiago.

The 102-megawatt Torsa wind project will consist of three wind farms — Cardonal, Manantiales and Los Cerillos — which are all due to be finalized in 2022. Together, the wind farms are expected to produce more than 300 gigawatt hours of renewable energy each year, enough power to supply 100,000 Chilean households.

“The South American nation is an attractive market for Statkraft, and we want to capitalize on our combined expertise in power generation and market operations to best serve the market and provide energy to large industrial customers in the country,” said Jurgen Tzschoppe, executive vice president, international power at Statkraft. “These three wind farms are not only expanding our generating capacity in Chile; it is broadening our renewable energy portfolio by including wind power
