Investors are seeking commercial real estate debt to fill a bigger portion of their portfolios, and they want those investments to have a positive environmental and social impact, according to a report titled, “How does sustainability fit into commercial real estate debt?” by Darren Rawcliffe, director of research, Europe, with Nuveen Real Estate, which was published in the October issue of Institutional Real Estate Europe. Commercial real estate debt investments can provide steady, income-focused returns while supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy. “Commercial real estate debt has the capability to provide funding for development or refurbishment projects that can deliver positive environmental changes. Like any other commercial real estate debt investment, doing so from a sustainable investment perspective requires selectivity and clear goals,” says Rawcliffe.
