The airline industry has a significant part to play in reducing carbon emissions, but it also is a significant contributor to the global economy. Charting a sustainable and safe path forward will be a delicate balancing act.

A report by Ardian, The aviation industry’s runway to net zero: A look at the biggest challenges and opportunities facing the air-transport sector on the path to decarbonization, which was published in the May issue of Institutional Investment in Infrastructure, describes “three main decarbonization levers that can be activated to mitigate the future carbon impact of the overall aviation sector.”

These are large-scale use of alternative fuels, innovative technological updates to aircraft, and improvements to makes airport operations and infrastructure more efficient.
