Government of South Korea has announced a $43 billion plan to develop the world’s largest offshore wind farm by 2030 as part of its efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. It was announced by South Korea's Moon Jae-In administration.
The 8.2 gigawatt offshore wind farm will be located in Jeonnam province. It will be seven times larger than the United Kingdom’s 1.2-gigawatt Hornsea 1, which is currently the largest offshore wind farm, developed by Danish energy company Ørsted.
The massive 48.5 trillion won project was signed off on late last week by South Korea president Moon Jae-in and a group of utility and engineering companies that will develop the wind farm, including Korea Electric Power Corp, Hanwha, and CS Wind Corp.
