SEC releases accredited investor report, suggest exclusion of retirement assets

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) released a report Dec. 14 on its review of the definition of accredited investor. SEC is required to publish a report every four years evaluating the definition.

Accredited investors in the United States are individuals or entities that meet certain financial criteria. Qualifications include: the individual has an annual income of at least $200,000 (or $300,000 for joint income with a spouse) for the past two consecutive years, and there is a reasonable expectation of the same income level in the current year; the individual has a net worth exceeding $1 million, either individually or jointly with a spouse; and an entity, including a private business development company or an organization with total assets exceeding $5 million, may qualify as an accredited investor if all of its equity owners are accredited investors.
