Nearly $1.7 billion in cumulative disclosed investment was deployed into off-grid energy access markets from 2010 through the end of 2018, with over $1.2 billion deployed since the beginning of 2016, according to a new report by natural resources consultancy Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables, and Energy 4 Impact, a nonprofit organization.
The ranks of top investors suggest that public and private deployments will increasingly intersect. In blended finance arrangements, early-stage capital, mainly patient and concessionary finance and grants from the public and donor sectors, de-risk deals and crowd-in private sector investors. However, concessional capital also may crowd out commercial debt. Competition for blended finance is still steep, and the sector needs approximately $1 billion of early-stage capital to scale further.
