REITs return 1.2% in January, outperform S&P 500

U.S. REITs had a total return of more than 1.2 percent in January, according to the FTSE Nareit All Equity REITs Index. Taken as a whole, REITs outperformed the broader stock market, as measured by the S&P 500 Index, which was virtually flat in January with a return of –0.16 percent.

REITs performance in January builds upon a 2019 total return of 28.7 percent, according to the FTSE Nareit All Equity REITs Index. The best-performing property subsectors in 2019 were manufactured homes, industrial, single-family rentals and data centers, with total returns of 49.1 percent, 48.7 percent, 44.3 percent and 44.2 percent, respectively.
