REITs continue to roll in 2015

After a stellar 2014 that saw the FTSE NAREIT All Equity REITs Index return 28.03 percent, far outpacing the NCREIF Property Index’s 11.82 percent return, REITs have continued to roll in 2015 with the NAREIT index returning 6.17 percent in January alone.

The index’s residential REITs, which returned an aggregate 40.04 percent in 2014, have continued their strong performance in 2015 with a 7.05 percent return in January led by manufactured homes REITs, which returned 8.37 percent.

But the index’s top performing sector in January was self-storage. The four self-storage REITs returned 9.61 percent for the month — nearly a third of their total return in 2014. Healthcare REITs were not far behind, returning 9.27 percent in January.
