Public pension funds are leading the charge on monumental growth in institutional assets in ESG investments in the United States, according to the U.S. SIF Foundation's biennial Report on U.S. Sustainable, Responsible and Impact Investing Trends.
The report states sustainable, responsible and impact investing assets hit $12 trillion in early 2018, a 38 percent increase from 2016.
The majority of the funds, or $8.6 trillion, are managed on behalf of institutional investors, with public pension funds and other publicly pooled portfolios accounting for 54 percent. Insurance companies followed at 37 percent, education-related organizations at 6 percent, and foundations and labor organizations trailed at 1 percent each.
There are $46.6 trillion in assets under professional management in the United States.
