The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board (Ontario Teachers’) has achieved a net return of 11.1 percent for the year ending Dec. 31, 2021, exceeding its benchmark by 2.3 percent.
This outperformance resulted in a record annual value-add of C$5.5 billion ($4.3 billion), growing the pension fund’s net assets to C$241.6 billion ($188 billion). This was largely driven by outperformance by the pension fund’s infrastructure, private equity, credit and inflation-sensitive asset classes, which all exceeded their individual benchmarks, according to Ontario Teachers’.
As of Jan. 1, 2022, the plan was fully funded with a C$17.2 billion ($13.4 billion) preliminary funding surplus, marking the plan’s ninth consecutive fully funded year.
“Our diversified portfolio had an excellent performance in 2021 with strong returns across private assets, particularly in private equity, infrastructure, inflation-sensitive assets and the Teachers’ Innovation Platform,” sai
