The $75.1 billion State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio’s total fund return for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2017, was 14.29 percent. The fiscal 2017 return beat the total fund benchmark by 0.63 percent. This follows returns of 0.92 percent in fiscal year 2016 and 5.45 percent in fiscal 2015.
The system’s active management of the funds, rather than relying on index funds, added approximately $400 million in value after all investment costs during the fiscal year. The strong performance was led by a 22.2 percent return on international investments, compared with a benchmark return of 21.6 percent, and a 19.6 percent return on domestic equities, compared with a benchmark return of 18.5 percent.
For its long-term total fund returns, Ohio STRS’ expects a five-year return of 10.06 percent, 10-year return of 5.48 percent, 20-year return of 7.02 percent and30-year return of 7.45 percent.
