NZ Super Fund appoints Matt Whineray to CEO

The board of the NZ$37.9 billion ($27.8 billion) New Zealand Superannuation Fund’s has appointed Matt Whineray as CEO, effective July 1, 2018. He has been acting CEO since March 2018, replacing Adrian Orr.

Whineray will oversee the superannuation fund, which has had a 10.5 percent average annual rate of return since inception, before tax and after costs, and a workforce of approximately 140 people, including 55 investment professionals. While 86 percent of the fund is invested globally, it has NZ$5 billion ($3.4 billion) invested in New Zealand.

Whineray joined the organization in 2008 as general manager, private markets. Since 2014, he has been the board’s CIO, responsible for the fund’s investment activity in listed and unlisted markets, both directly and through investment managers.

In 2017 Whineray was ranked ninth in Chief Investment Officer magazine’s Power 100 list of the world’s top investment managers.
