The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority issued a master plan for developing 2.4 gigawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030, enough to power up 1.2 million homes.
“While the federal government continues to turn its back on protecting natural resources and plots to open up our coastline to drilling, New York is doubling down on our commitment to renewable energy and the industries of tomorrow,” said Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York.
The plan will lead to the procurement of at least 800 megawatts over the next two years, with solicitations in 2018 and 2019.
According to the governor’s office, offshore wind is a critical component of Cuomo’s mandate to generate 50 percent of the state’s electricity needs from renewable energy sources by 2030.
