NextEra and ExxonMobil to build 1.2GW natural gas plant to power U.S. data centers

NextEra and ExxonMobil have plans to build a 1.2-gigawatt natural gas–fired power plant to supply electricity data centers in the United States.

The companies have acquired 2,500 acres for the facility on a site located adjacent to Exxon’s existing carbon dioxide pipeline infrastructure in the southeastern United States. The plant will include carbon capture and sequestration technology, according to reports.

The facility is expected to have a capacity of 1.45 gigawatts. NextEra and ExxonMobil will reportedly begin marketing the site to a hyperscale data center developer in the first quarter 2026.

According to reports, NextEra also is acquiring Symmetry Energy Solutions to bolster its natural gas supply. Symmetry Energy supplies approximately 1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas annually to more than 5,500 large customers across 34 states.
