New Jersey pledges $161m to municipalities for infra upgrades in 2020

by Kali Persall

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has earmarked $161.25 million for road, bridge, safety and other infrastructure improvements in 542 New Jersey municipalities for fiscal year 2020.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy announced the grants in late November, marking the first awards made under the Municipal Aid grant cycle that better align with the state’s construction season and municipal budget cycles, according to NJDOT.

The Municipal Aid program consists of seven project categories, including roadway preservation, roadway safety, quality of life, mobility, bikeway, pedestrian safety, and bridge preservation. In total, 661 applicants from 546 municipalities applied for the grants, with 545 receiving awards in 542 municipalities.

With the allocations, NJDOT will have awarded $1.2 billion to local governments during the first 18 months of Murphy’s administration.
