New Disney solar farm to power two theme parks

by Andrea Zander

Walt Disney World Resort has partnered with Origis Energy USA and the Reedy Creek Improvement District to develop a 270-acre, 50-megawatt solar facility, which will be online by the end of the year, generating enough renewable clean energy to power two of its four theme parks in Central Florida.

The solar facility will include half a million solar panels and will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 57,000 tons per year.

The farm is part of The Walt Disney Co.’s recently launched incentive to deliver its 2020 goal of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent compared to 2012.

In addition, Disney Stores recently announced it will be phasing out plastic bags at all U.S. stores by the end of next month. Disney Stores will offer guests Disney branded reusable bags for 99 cents. All 215 stores in North America will phase out the plastic bags entirely by the end of May; reusable ones are already on sale.
