The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has awarded Vecellio & Grogan a $146 million contract to construct an interstate bypass in Richmond County, according to several media sources.
The 7.2-mile, four-lane Rockingham interstate bypass will connect U.S. 220 north of Rockingham to the U.S. 74 bypass on the west side of the city, reported Transportation Today. It will also become part of the planned Interstate 73/74.
The project aims to reduce local congestion by removing interstate traffic from local roads and highways and signalized intersections. The bypass has been in the planning stages for more than 20 years.
Work will begin this month and is slated for completion in 2023.
