Michael Hannibal joins Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners

by Released

Michael Hannibal has joined Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) as partner to take a lead role on CIP’s investment activities within the large and growing offshore wind business.

“I am very pleased to welcome Michael Hannibal to the CIP partnership,” said Jakob Baruel Poulsen, CIP managing partner. “Michael is one of the pioneers and leading figures within offshore wind and spearheaded Siemens’ and Siemens Gamesa’s development into the globally leading offshore wind turbine supplier and service provider. He brings deep market knowledge, a large industrial network, and proven global leadership skills and track record to CIP. In this capacity Michael will take a lead role on the investments in CIPs offshore wind farms in operations, construction and development across three continents.”

CIP-managed funds have invested in Veja Mate, a 402-megawatt German offshore wind farm in operations, Beatrice, a 588-megawatt Scottish offshore wind farm under construction, and offshore wind development projects in the United States, Canada, and Taiwan. Offshore wind is expected to grow at double-digit rates over the coming years as new markets roll out the technology. In recent years, technological advancements have reduced the cost of energy from offshore wind significantly, and the technology is now considered a cost competitive and clean alternative to conventional large-scale power production.

The offshore wind industry is now expanding from a primarily Northwestern European business to a truly global business.

Hannibal accepted in 2004 a position at Bonus Energy. Shortly thereafter, it became Siemens Wind Power, and is now Siemens Gamesa. Hannibal held position as CEO Offshore from 2011 to October 2017. During his tenure at Siemens Gamesa, the firm developed into a clear market leader within the offshore wind business — both as turbine manufacturer and service provider. Siemens Gamesa has supplied more than 60 percent of the installed offshore wind turbine capacity globally.

Hannibal will join CIP on Dec. 21, 2017.
