Mexico plans $14b infrastructure spend to offset damage from COVID-19

Mexico has unveiled a planned $14 billion infrastructure spend in an effort to boost the struggling economy in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The infrastructure package will be mostly privately financed, and it will involve some 39 projects in the communications, energy and the environmental sectors, according to various news reports. Projects include the construction of a train link between Mexico City and the central city of Queretaro, as well as a major investment in state oil giant Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex).

The plan is also expected to create up to 190,000 jobs.

The investment follows on the heels of an earlier infrastructure spending plan announced by the Mexican government in November 2019. In the first phase of the plan, Mexico was looking to spend some $44 billion on 147 projects over five years, according to Reuters.
