McDonald’s to buy 380 MW of clean energy in U.S.

by Andrea Zander

Fast-food chain McDonald’s USA has signed two long-term, large-scale virtual power-purchase agreements (VPPAs) to purchase power from the Aviator Wind West wind farm in Coke County, Texas and a solar project located in Texas.

Power from the two projects amounts to 380 megawatts and is expected to prevent more than 700,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions from entering into the atmosphere.

In 2018, McDonald’s set a greenhouse gas emissions target approved by the Science Based Targets initiative, and these VPPAs represent the company’s first big step in meeting its goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its restaurants and offices by 36 percent by 2030.
