Keppel-led consortium selected to deliver ammonia power-generation project in Singapore

by Kali Persall

A consortium led by Keppel’s infrastructure division, consisting of Advario, Keppel and Sumitomo Corp., has been appointed by the Energy Market Authority (EMA) and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to proceed to the next phase of Singapore’s low- or zero-carbon ammonia power-generation and bunkering project on Jurong Island.

When implemented, this would be among the world’s first direct-ammonia combustion power plants — and Singapore’s first, according to Cindy Lim, CEO of Keppel’s infrastructure division.

Ammonia is emerging as a promising fuel for the future, as it does not produce carbon dioxide when combusted and is relatively easier to store and transport. These qualities make it a strong candidate for decarbonizing sectors such as power generation and shipping. When produced from renewable energy, green ammonia can play a key role in reaching net-zero emissions while also supporting global energy security.
