Japanese company buys into Light Rail Manila

Japan’s Sumitomo Corp. has indirectly acquired a 19.2 percent stake in Light Rail Manila Corp. in the Philippines, according to several news reports.

Light Rail Manila Corporation is responsible for the construction, operation and maintenance of the light rail transit in Manila, including the Manila Light Rail Transit System Line 1 operating concessionaire.

Sumitomo joins Metro Pacific Investments, AC Infrastructure Holdings and Macquarie Group as shareholders in the company.

Light Rail Manila 1 will consist of the 20.7-kilometer (12.8-mile) existing System (known as LRT 1) and the 11.7-kilometer (7.2-mile) Cavite Extension, according to Light Rail Manila’s website.

Construction of the original 15-kilometer (9.3-mile) existing system was completed in 1981 with full commercial operation at the original 18 Passenger Stations, from Baclaran to Monumento, starting in 1985. An additional 5.7 kilometers (3.5 miles) and two additional passenger stations were
