J-POWER USA Development Co. and Fortress Investment Group are planning to jointly develop a 50-megawatt solar plant and a 190-megawatt energy storage facility in order to convert Birchwood Power, a coal plant that has been in operation since 1996, into facilities that will generate and store clean renewable energy.
The Birchwood solar project is J-POWER’s third solar project in development and part of a new initiative to add renewable generation to the company’s existing portfolio.
“By repurposing a coal-fired power plant as carbon-free solar and energy storage facilities, we will continue to deliver reliable electricity generation to the marketplace,” said J-POWER in a statement.
