How investors and developers are repurposing dead shopping malls

How many more stories do we have to read about America’s dead and dying shopping malls? Probably zero. What is more interesting are the stories about investors and developers who redevelop malls in the United States and Canada, especially considering that hundreds of traditional shopping malls have closed in the past 20 years, and there are many more closures expected to come.

But exactly how shopping malls are successfully redeveloped for new uses is the big question. It’s also the question the NAIOP Research Foundation wanted an answer to, prompting it to commission a report examining how developers are transforming struggling or shuttered malls.

More specifically, the report examines how developers have revitalized properties by adding new uses, amenities and services, and takes a look at five case studies in the United States and Canada.
