Inflation pressures to grow beyond 2022

Inflation concerns have been at top of mind for global investors and consumers alike in recent months, propelled by supply-side constraints in the face of strong demand and a slew of other economic factors. A recent whitepaper released by IFM Investors, titled Inflation: Considerations for Real Assets, predicts that inflation pressures will continue to build in 2022 and beyond.

Even as near-term pressures ease, such as the pandemic, supply-chain issues and the implementation of more restrictive monetary policies, structural forces such as larger budget deficits and deglobalization risks are likely to continue to exert upward pressure on inflation over the medium term.

Such a spike in inflation in advanced economies has not been experienced for decades, according to the whitepaper, and there is uncertainty as to how and when it will be resolved. For asset owners such as IFM Investors, this adds an additional challenge of navigating regional and global inflation
