Indonesia to spend $40b on metro train upgrade

Indonesia is gearing up for a massive $40 billion in spending to upgrade and extend Jakarta’s metro train network, several media sources have reported.

Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit, the operator of the railway, is looking to construct 143 miles by 2030, according to William Sabandar, president and director of Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit. The company currently has completed 10.

The initiative is meant to ease congestion, upgrade infrastructure and create a $7 trillion economy by 2045, according to International Business Times. It is part of a larger modernization plan whereby president Joko Widodo is planning to spend $455 billion on infrastructure projects, such as port, dam and power plant construction, over the next five years.
