Spain’s Iberdrola and fertilizer supplier Fertiberia have signed a €150 million ($177 million) agreement to construct the largest green hydrogen plant for industrial use in Europe.
The Spanish companies said the plant will be built in Puertollano, Spain, a location with a large industrial hub near to the National Hydrogen Centre, and is slated to commence operations in 2021.
Iberdrola will be responsible for the production of green hydrogen from 100 percent renewable sources, including a 100-megawatt solar photovoltaic plant, a 20-megawatt hour lithium-ion battery system, and a 20-megawatt electrolytic hydrogen production system.
“Today we are launching the first major green hydrogen project in Europe, demonstrating that thanks to renewables and technological innovation, it is possible to continue to meet the needs of the electrification and decarbonization of our industry,” said Ignacio Galan, chairman of Iberdrola.
