Hydrogen faces hurdles despite upward trajectory

A new report from DNV found hydrogen has gained favor in the energy industry, but infrastructure and cost remain two of the biggest hurdles to scaling up the hydrogen economy.

Industry leaders are in agreement that hydrogen is an integral part of the clean energy transition. According to the report, Rising to the challenge of a hydrogen economy, by 2025, almost half (44 percent) of energy companies globally involved in hydrogen expect it to account for more than a tenth of their revenue. This number is expected to rise to 73 percent of companies by 2030 — a significant increase from 8 percent of companies today.

In addition, three quarters of the more than 1,100 senior energy professionals surveyed said the Paris Agreement targets will not be possible without a large-scale hydrogen economy.
