A joint venture between HOCHTIEF, an engineering-led global infrastructure group, and construction engineering company J. Murphy & Sons has won the £400 million ($534 million) contract to deliver the second phase of a tunnel project in London.
The six-year London Power Tunnels (LPT2) project involves the construction of 32.5 kilometers (20 miles) of tunnel for the energy supply of London. Work is scheduled to start in March 2020.
According to a statement released by the joint venture, the project expects to eliminate the need to dig up the 50-year-old existing cable infrastructure, which is reaching the end of its life.
“This contract award is a major milestone in the next phase of the London Power Tunnels project and will help ensure the capital has secure, reliable access to electricity to meet the energy demands of the future,” said Nicola Shaw, executive director of National Grid, a U.K. utility.
