HOCHTIEF builds power supply tunnel in Stockholm

by Jody Barhanovich

HOCHTIEF, a global construction and services group, and Implenia, a Switzerland-based construction and construction services company, have jointly won the contract to build a 8.6-mile power supply tunnel for the Swedish capital. The client, Svenska Kraftnät (Swedish National Grid), awarded the contract, which is valued at roughly €90 million ($102 million), to the joint venture in which HOCHTIEF Infrastructure and Implenia have equal stakes. HOCHTIEF is the technical lead in the consortium.

The Anneberg-Skanstull Tunnel is part of the City Link project intended to improve the electricity supply in the greater Stockholm area. A tunnel-driving machine will be used to build the tunnel, which has a diameter of 16.5 feet and will be located 164 feet to 328 feet below ground. The project also encompasses six ventilation shafts, elevators, and the construction of technical buildings for electrotechnical equipment.

Completion is scheduled for 2024.
