Indonesia has approved the construction of a 4,200-kilometer (2,609-mile) undersea high-voltage cable system running from Darwin, Australia, to Singapore, according to The Economic Times.
Sun Cable's cable system, known as AAPowerlink, will generate solar electricity from a giant solar farm, and the world’s largest battery. It is expected to supply up to 15 percent of Singapore's electricity needs and slash emissions by 6 million metric tons annually, starting in 2028.
As part of the deal, Sun Cable will invest $2.58 billion into Indonesia.
“We expect this project will have a sustainable impact for our economy through various procurement programs that will benefit the industry and the government's revenue,” said Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, Indonesia’s coordinating minister of maritime and investment.
