GTIS plans infrastructure expansion in Brazil, makes hire

by Andrea Zander

GTIS Partners has plans to invest in Brazil infrastructure, as part of its diversification efforts.

Eduardo Klepacz joined the firm from Cubico Sustainable Investments to direct its most immediate operations in the country.

"The Brazilian economy is recovering. This in turn has led to an increase in the need for additional infrastructure," said Joshua Pristaw, senior managing director and co-head of GTIS Brazil. "More than ever in the recent past, there is now a need for energy, data centers, broadband and other infrastructure-related resources, but the Brazilian financial crisis has limited the ability of the Brazilian government to finance this infrastructure development. This creates opportunities for private sector investment. Given our existing relationships with technology and telecommunications companies in our business office real estate division, we are convinced."

GTIS will also participate in energy operations, which will include the acquisition of land and regulatory authorizations until construction and commercialization. Initially, it will focus on the generation and transmission of energy, including wind, solar and small-scale hydro, as well as high-voltage power lines and gas pipelines.

GTIS will also invest in opportunities in telecommunications technology and infrastructure such as data centers, digital broadband networks and cell phone towers, and will try to find ways to provide low-cost energy to those properties.

Since 2005, GTIS has raised $2.7 billion to invest in real estate in Brazil, where it has developed about 15,000 residential units, 5.5 million square feet (511,000 square meters) of industrial, logistics and office properties, and 53 hotels.
