GridLiance, an independent electric transmission utility holding company, has acquired a majority interest in the transmission facilities of Winfield, Kansas. The acquisition expands GridLiance's footprint into the state and marks the company's second acquisition this year.
GridLiance High Plains, a subsidiary of GridLiance, bought a 65 percent ownership stake in the city's 69-kilovolt transmission system and related-substation equipment. Under the deal, the City of Winfield will retain a 35 percent ownership stake in the facilities and will continue to maintain and service them. Winfield also will retain ownership of its electric distribution assets and continue to provide retail electric service.
GridLiance and Winfield have begun relocating transmission lines that were damaged due to years of flooding on the Walnut River in an effort to improve the quality of life for the local community and region. The relocation is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
