Global wind power industry to add 1TW of new capacity by 2030

by Kali Persall

The global wind power industry broke records in 2020, with 114 gigawatts of new wind capacity added globally, representing an 82 percent increase year-over-year, according to a new report from Wood Mackenzie.

This is the highest global annual installation total on record.

According to the report, in 2020, China alone added 72 gigawatts of installed capacity, which would have qualified as the most capacity added globally in a single year. In addition, 43 gigawatts of wind capacity were added from other countries around the world in 2020, notably the United States, Brazil, the Netherlands and Australia. This represented a 15 percent increase from the previous year.

China is targeting a buildout of 1,200 gigawatts of wind and solar by 2030, which is expected to result in 408 gigawatts of new wind capacity from 2021 to 2030, representing 41 percent of global build. The rest of Asia Pacific will add 126 gigawatts by 2030, with India accounting for half of that.
