Global real estate investments continue to rise

The size of the professionally managed global real estate investment market rose by 4.7 percent from $8.5 trillion in 2017 to $8.9 trillion in 2018, according to a report from MSCI. The growth in 2018 was at a similar level as the growth in 2014, 2015 and 2016, with increases of 2.1 percent, 2.8 percent and 4.1 percent, respectively.

The United States remained the largest market in 2018, its share of the 25-country index increased by 94 basis points from 40 percent to 40.9 percent. Japan remained the second-largest market with a 10.8 percent weight, and its share increased by 9 basis points, while the United Kingdom remained in third position, although its weight decreased by 39 basis points to 9.3 percent.

China ranked as the fourth-largest national market, overtaking Germany, which had held this position for 2017. Although both markets grew in 2018, China’s increase was larger.
