The government of Ghana is making strides to establish the country’s first nuclear power plant, according to a statement released last week.
Ghana’s vice president Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia announced that the government has established an organization to construct and operate the nuclear plant and has already deployed capital to support the site selection process.
According to the World Nuclear Association, Ghana’s 2016 electricity production was 13 TWh, comprised of 7 TWh fossil fuels and 6 TWh hydropower.
In 2007, the government announced plans to introduce nuclear power as an energy source. In 2015, parliament passed legislation to establish a regulatory entity, a necessary requirement to operate a nuclear power plant.
