FortisBC signs first export contract for new Canadian LNG facility

by Kali Persall

FortisBC, a regulated utility focused on providing safe and reliable energy, has signed a two-year agreement to produce 53,000 tons of liquefied natural gas per year for Top Speed Energy Corp. for export to China, enough to heat 30,000 Canadian households for a year.

The agreement comes on the heels of the Tilbury LNG expansion project in Delta, British Columbia, completed earlier this year. The expansion added 250,00 tons of LNG production capacity per year, with 46,000 cubic meters in additional storage capacity. The new facility is said to be one of the cleanest LNG facilities in the world, reducing between 90,000 and 180,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually.

In 2017, FortisBC became the first company in Canada to supply LNG for export to China, according to FortisBC.

FortisBC owns and operates approximately 49,000 kilometers of natural gas transmission and distribution pipelines, with a focus on natural gas, propane and thermal energy solutions.
