The European Union (EU) is planning to funnel €838 million ($935 million) to a Polish rail project, Railway Gazette reported on Oct. 19.
The funds will be used to upgrade a 214.5-kilometer (133.2-mile) section of the TEN-T network, which includes subgrade strengthening, track renewal and bridge reconstruction. The project aims to reduce freight times by 37 minutes and passenger journeys by 30 minutes.
The project is slated for completion by January 2023.
The investment follows the EU’s earlier commitment of €600 million ($669 million) to Polish rail infrastructure projects in September, in the form of two grants made through its European Union Cohesion Fund, reports Rail Journal.
The first grant will provide €487 million ($543 million) to rollout GSM-R across 13,844 kilometers (8,602 miles) of the Polish network by July 2023. The second grant of €117 million ($130 million) will go toward reopening the Tarnowskie Góry – Zawie
